Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

Almost a billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean drinking water. A third of the world’s population lives without basic sanitation infrastructure like a toilet. Every day 4,000 children die from illnesses like diarrhea, dysentery, and cholera caused by dirty water and unhygienic living conditions. We can’t fight malnutrition without tackling the diseases that contribute to it. As part of our integrated approach to hunger, we’re getting safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services to communities in need all over the world.

What We Do

Providing Safe Drinking Water Access

During emergencies, we truck water into affected areas and install water storage tanks and above-ground reservoirs. In communities faced with scarcity and reliant on unsafe drinking sources, we drill and decontaminate wells, install hand-pumps, protect natural springs, tap aquifers, rehabilitate damaged infrastructure, and pipe water into hard-to-reach villages and health centers.

Promoting Sanitation and Hygiene

A staggering 2.5 billion people lack basic sanitation. Action Against Hunger is working to change that, village by village. To prevent epidemics of infectious diseases during periods of crisis, we distribute hygiene kits, build latrines and hand-washing stations, and create hygienic bathing facilities. In communities at risk, we teach healthy practices like hand-washing, cooking with clean utensils, drawing water from protected sources, and building simple water filters made from basic materials.

Ensuring Lasting Change

The long-term benefits of our programs would be impossible to sustain without our commitment to community participation. We are building the capacity of local populations and institutions to manage their water and sanitation infrastructure themselves. We support and organize community-based water committees and train Village Health Teams to model good sanitation and hygiene practices for their communities long after we leave an area.
