Bolivia is the poorest country in South America. Despite the fact that it has a literacy rate of almost 90%, more than half of the population lives beneath the national poverty threshold. Rich in minerals and energy resources (Bolivia is located in the region with the second highest natural gas reserves), most of its population works in agriculture, which provides scant resources. With each rainy season in the past three years, thousands of Bolivian families have lost their homes and way of life due to river surges and recurring floods that sweep away their crops.
