With a life expectancy that is under the age of 45, the Central African Republic is at the bottom of the ranking of the United Nations' Human Development Index. It is one of the poorest and most heavily indebted countries in the world. Without an outlet to the sea, 84% of the population lives on less than two dollars a day, and only one out of every four inhabitants has access to drinking water, a situation of structural poverty that is aggravated by the conflicts in neighboring countries.

Until recently, the southern part of the Central African Republic was relatively stable economically, boasting large diamond and wood industries. But over the last few months, a decline in these industries, coupled with poor investment in local agriculture and a reliance on imported food, have put enormous pressure on the population.
